“Over 10,000 young people missing from electoral register in Swansea”

New figures published this week show almost one million voters have disappeared from the Electoral Register in the last year, particularly in towns and cities with large numbers of students and young people.

Geraint Davies MP said: “In the last year almost one million people have fallen off the Electoral Register, including a staggering 10,053 in the City and County of Swansea. This is a direct consequence of the Government’s decision to ignore warnings that rushing through new individual registration reforms would damage democracy.

“This is nothing less than a scandal. The Government is sitting by and watching tens of thousands of young people in Swansea lose their democratic rights.

“But young people must be heard, loud and clear, in the general election. That’s why I’m determined to do all I can to get local young people back on the electoral register, and casting their vote in May.

“I will today be writing to every College Principle, Head Teacher, University Vice Chancellor and Student Union President to urge them to encourage as many of their students to register to vote.”

Geraint Davies MP has also welcomed the launch of #Shapeyourfuture - Labour’s plan for the next generation. #Shapeyourfuture will put the ideas and aspirations of young people at the heart of Labour’s plans for the general election and for government. The Tories and Lib Dems have betrayed young people by trebling tuition fees, scrapping the EMA and leaving 750,000 young people unemployed.

Geraint Davies MP said: “This General Election is an opportunity for young people to shape their future with better policies on housing, jobs and pay. So make you sure you have a voice – and then make sure you get heard – because the stakes for your generation are greater than ever.”

Labour’s consultation will run from 16th January to 16th February, including lots of activity on National Voter Registration Day on February 5th.  Geraint Davies MP has called on as many local young people as possible to participate in the consultation by visiting www.labour.org.uk/shapeyourfuture and by tweeting their ideas on the hashtag #ShapeYourFuture.
