Dec 2011- Support for the pub industry

Geraint has spoken out about the threat to the pub industry from cheap supermarket drink and rising costs.

He joined staff at The Cross Keys Inn, in St Mary Street, to learn about the problems facing the industry.

A recent report by the  Save Our Pubs and Clubs campaign showed 375 pubs closed in Wales from 2007 to 2010 with Swansea West having 20 closures.

Closures have been attributed to a combination of rising costs, cut-price alcohol promotions by supermarkets as well as the economic downturn.

Geraint said: "Pubs are part of our community and are clearly struggling during these hard times. I am concerned that they are not receiving enough support and there will be more closures whilst people continue to flock to supermarkets to stock up on cheap alcohol which causes more problems in society."
