   Feb 2012 - Flooding

Geraint has written to Environment Agency Wales and to Swansea Council expressing concern over a proposed housing development behind Mumbles Road in Derwen Fawr.

Constituents from the Blackpill, Derwen Fawr and Mayals Residents Association have contacted Geraint about the proposed development put forward by Global Horizons.

The properties in front of the area proposed for development are already subject to flooding, both alluvial and tidal, and there are concerns that this will worsen.

The MP previously led the Wales-wide team - Flood Risk Management Wales - charged with adapting Wales to climate change through investing in flood defences and ensuring councils are committed to sustainable development including not building on flood plains.

He said: "Housing development on flood plains is simply asking for trouble. Global warming means increasing risks of flooding rise over time and this inevitably means flood plains will be flooded in future.

"The extra development being planned will reduce the area of natural drainage available so that the combined pressure from river, coastal and rainfall flooding will increase the risks faced by existing properties in the area. That is why I have been acting in partnership with local residents to urge caution and seek expert advice."
