Geraint Davies, MP visits Maggie's on World Cancer Day

Geraint Davies Labour MP for Swansea West has visited Swansea’s cancer charity Maggie’s on World Cancer Day to give his support and says those on universal credit with cancer need to be treated with more sensitivity and respect.

Geraint Davies MP for Swansea West has visited Maggie’s cancer support charity centre at Singleton Hospital to celebrate and support World Cancer Day.

Geraint Davies said, “It was great to visit Maggie’s and have a tour round the centre for an update of the services they offer. Maggie’s does a fantastic job for people with cancer and those affected and is a friendly drop-in centre and place for expert advice on coping with life with a cancer diagnosis. This is a great facility where people can meet others with similar challenges from Swansea and beyond that deserves our heart-felt support.

“It is important that people getting to grips with a cancer diagnosis do not to face any additional difficulties with the Universal Credit system but my visit to Maggie’s made clear that they do. For many the new system means, in getting their financial rights fulfilled, they face unnecessary anxiety at a time they are coping with cancer. In the past people were able to have their condition registered in a sensitive way with the DS1500 form filled in by their GP. Now the Government has introduced instead a system where people have to personally declare themselves as terminally ill with a low life expectancy. They are then contacted by phone and expected to say they expect to live less than six months. This is heartless, unnecessary and completely unnecessary and inflicts great anxiety, hardship and distraction on people suffering the trauma of severe illness. I will be taking up this issue directly with the ministers directly responsible for this cruel policy.”

“Maggie’s provides a vital and important service for those in need. We all know someone affected by cancer and Maggie’s is a first-class local charity providing a much-needed service. Maggie’s deserves our support and thanks this Monday on World Cancer Day so please give your donations via their website https://www.maggiescentres.org/
