Liberal Democrats spent 50% more than Labour in Swansea West Election
Figures released from the Electoral Commission show that the Liberal Democrats in Swansea West invested a massive £22,701 in their failed bid to win the seat from Labour – 50% more than Labour who spent £15,119 and twice as much as the Tories who spent £9244.
Said Geraint Davies who was elected Labour & Co-operative MP
“The Liberal Democrats threw money at their campaign as if there was no tomorrow and, following their broken promises on student fees and VAT, they may have no tomorrow in Swansea West. They spent thousands more through their ‘national spend’ targeted at Swansea West but their vote only rose by the same as the Tories who spent half as much.
“In the worst general election for Labour since 1983 Labour’s vote only fell by 1500 with both Tory and Lib Dem votes growing by 2000. That’s why our majority fell by 3700 to 500. Considering the previous Labour MP had a personal vote from serving Swansea West for 46 years this shows that the Labour vote is resilient to gold plated Liberal Democrat campaigns.
“ All eyes are now on next year’s Assembly election when local voters will judge the Liberal Democrats on the impact of their deep and rapid cuts to public services which they had promised not to inflict with such unnecessary and unfair severity.” |
