Dear Editor,
Contrary to Cherry Taylor’s letter of 29 June I am not new to Swansea having lived here for 5 years and my family on my mother’s side having been here for 4 generations. Nor have I picked a fight with the local police. I have now met on a number of occasions with Police Chief Superintendent Mark Mathias and have had no difference of view on any count. Concern over possible strategic centralisation in Cardiff due to future cuts is not at odds with the fact that thankfully command and control still resides in Swansea.
As for the Council, I will not stand aside as the Liberal Democrats undermine our children’s future through swinging schools cuts unprecedented across Wales. It is true that I made an off the cuff remark about the Tories being the rotten apples visiting the Market that was misunderstood but this was after the 2005 election so had no impact on the result.
It is also true that I am raising the things that matter to the people of Swansea West both in Parliament and in Swansea which I promised to do if elected as Swansea West MP. In contrast, the Liberal Democrats promised more investment in schools, which they are cutting both locally and nationally, and to oppose any increase in VAT, which they now support. I am sorry that this is uncomfortable for former Liberal Democrat voters and welcome the fact that it explains why so many former Lib Dems are now joining the Labour Party in Swansea West
