Peter Hain launchPeter Hain & Geraint Davies launch Swansea Labour General Election Campaign to a flying start

Secretary of State for Wales Peter Hain and Swansea West parliamentary candidate Geraint Davies joined Swansea West & East AMs Andrew Davies & Val Lloyd AM & Labour Group Leader David Phillips with Labour supporters from across the City for a flying start to Labour's General Election Campaign in Swansea.

Labour supporters massed in Castle Square before, led by Geraint & Peter, a meet & greet walkabout around Swansea city centre and market receiving a warm reception.

The campaign will focus on the choice for Swansea voters between a Labour Government investing in jobs, training and economic growth to secure the recovery or a Tory Government offering earlier and deeper cuts in jobs and services to cut the deficit risking another recession.

Said Geraint Davies   "This election will be a turning point for Swansea, Wales & Britain. I know that some may wish to “give the others a go for a change” but the stakes are too high to gamble your family’s future on a Tory Government supported by the Liberal Democrats.

"Your vote may determine whether Swansea West continues to have a Labour MP and in turn whether Britain has a Labour or a Conservative Government.

"A Labour Government will secure the recovery investing in economic growth & skills for tomorrow’s jobs, taxing bankers’ bonuses & earnings over £150,000, low interest rates & efficiencies.

"A Tory Government will cut jobs, tax credits and public services in Swansea to reduce the deficit deeper & faster and to give the richest 3000 families in Britain £200,000 each in tax breaks.

"The Liberal Democrats will prop up a Tory Government with “savage cuts” proposed by their Leader Nick Clegg. They cannot form a government so their other promises are empty.

"Plaid Cymru needs a Labour Government to ensure the extra 14% in public spending per head we receive in Wales vs England. The Tories would cut Wales’ funding and a quarter of our MPs.

"The economic downturn has been painful but in Wales we have 85,000 more people in work than in 1997. Labour has provided the Winter Fuel Allowance, Pensions above earnings over 10 years, NHS operations in weeks not years, the minimum wage, crime down by a third & improved schools.

"If elected Labour will secure the recovery, link pensions to earnings in 2012, ensure Assembly money for schools reaches schools, provide employment & training, guaranteed policing for every community & a key worker for every cancer patient making Wales a stronger, smarter, safer, healthier country.

"Alan Williams has served as our Labour MP with great skill for 46 years and I’m grateful for his friendship and support since I returned to Swansea with my family 5 years ago. My own mother’s family is from Swansea for 4 generations and I’m happy to have been welcomed with such warmth and friendship across Swansea.

Alan Williams MP said “Geraint has all the right experience to be an excellent successor to me. He would be a first class MP for Swansea”.
