Swansea University Student Union is campaigning alongside Geraint Davies for the reinstatement of the right to vote on the University Campus. If you support students right to vote on campus then support the petition at the bottom of this page.
"The Student Union wants as many students as possible to participate in the General Election and to make it as easy as possible, This means the right to vote on campus so I urge all students to join our campaign. I'd like to thank Geraint Davies for his support in bringing the vote back to campus" said Student Union President Luke Young pictured with SU Communications Officer Cheryl Jones and Geraint Davies.
Last year the Liberal Democrat Council closed the polling stations in Swansea University before the 2009 Euro Election making it more difficult for students to participate in the vote. The Council claimed that it cost too much for too few votes cast in the previous year's Council Election.
“The turn out was low in the Council election because there’s little interest from students in the Council as services are centrally provided by the University. Students care more about important national and international issues and the Council has a duty to increase participation by making voting easy.”said Labour Parliamentary Candidate Geraint Davies
"Last year many students, in particular Freshers, wanted to vote to oppose the BNP but were unsure where to vote off campus so the Council undermined their right to vote.
That's why this year students are taking action to reinstate the right to vote at Fulton House and Hendrefoelan Student Village by supporting the petition below launched at Freshers' Refresh on 25 January to be presented to the Council ." said Geraint
The Lib Dem Council idea that voting stations should be withdrawn from low voting areas is fundamentally undemocratic and discriminates against communities who need encouragement not barriers to participate.
"Students futures will be seriously effected by the outcome of the General Election. Our voices must be heard not gagged and that's why we're asking all students to sign the petition below to make the Council listen and bring back the right to vote on campus." |
