Geraint Davies, MP for Swansea West, this month supported a Parliamentary Bill tabled by
Labour colleagues in the House of Commons, which extends the right to vote to sixteen and
seventeen year olds.
Speaking in Parliament, Geraint Davies said, “Young people have been systematically
hammered by the Government’s policies. Investment per pupil has fallen consistently, house
prices are unaffordable, and this is added to excessive student debt and high levels of rent.
The right to vote at 16 would help to shift this balance, giving representation to a group who
currently pay taxes and are eligible to join the armed forces. Extending the franchise in this
way will lead to greater investment and prioritisation of a neglected age group.”
