A Swansea MP has won backing for his support for a Bill which, if made into law, would allow communities to sell locally generated energy to local people.

Swansea West MP Geraint Davies’s support on the issue has been welcomed by Power for People, an organisation campaigning for more local clean energy.

Mr Davies said: “It is vital that communities benefit from the transition to decentralised and clean energy.

“The Local Electricity Bill will enable local energy generation to benefit local communities.

“This would include generation from local wind, solar and tidal projects, which we need to be developing in the Swansea Bay area.

“These projects will not only support the low-carbon transition, but will also provide valuable and rewarding jobs in Swansea.

“Currently, if a community owns a local energy structure, such as a field of solar panels or a wind turbine, they are not able to sell the energy it generates to local people.

“The Local Electricity Bill would create a ‘right to local supply’ for communities, allowing them to benefit from the money currently received by larger utilities.”

Power for People director Steve Shaw said, “We warmly welcome Geraint’s support for this initiative.

“People like clean, local energy most when they know that their communities are receiving benefits from it.”
