Ask your MP to support amendments for Clean Air
Please find your MP’s email and send a personalised version of the letter below: https://members.parliament.uk/members/Commons
Dear [Insert MP name]
As my local MP, I am writing to you to urge you to support amendments to the Environment Bill to deliver Clean Air.
I am aware that Air Pollution accounts for 64,000 preventable deaths annually in the UK at a cost of £20 billion to the economy according to the Royal College of Physicians. After EU air quality standards and their enforcement no longer apply, I want the Environment Bill to ensure World Health Organisation standards are adopted for the indoor and outdoor environments and enforced to protect our public health.
Please would you support and sign Early Day Motion 186 and 187 to include indoor air pollution in the Environment Bill; adopt World Health Organisation pollution guidelines for smaller particulates PM2.5 of 10 µg/m3 per year by 2030 and 12 µg/m3 per year by 2025 and an independent watchdog to levy fines for enforcement with proceeds going to the NHS for treatment and to local authorities to help to reduce local pollution.
As a parent, I believe the Environment Bill should also cover indoor air quality to reflect the fact that children spend 95 per cent of their time indoors where they are exposed to a variety of pollutants from chemicals in construction materials, furniture, cleaning and cosmetic products, damp and mould together with air pollution coming from outside. Please would you therefore also sign EDM 187 which includes indoor air within the scope of the Environment Bill.
I hope that as my representative in Parliament that you agree that our local children’s health is a key priority and that you support these EDMs and amending the Environment Bill accordingly. I look forward to hearing from you.
