Geraint Davies MP has backed calls for action to rescue people from high water bills during the COVID-19 crisis.

The MP for Swansea West has joined Mary Foy MPs call for the government do everything it can to relieve the pressure on water bill payers and help reduce the financial hardship many are suffering.

The letter by Ms Foy asks that the government ban all water disconnections, create a water bill holiday for those who need it and that water bills be based on equivalent usage from the previous year to account for increased usage during the current crisis.

Mr Davies said: “With people being asked to stay home to protect the NHS and save lives, it is vital that the government do everything in its power to support them.”

Since the beginning of the crisis millions of people have had to work from home, while many more have been made unemployed or had their work temporarily suspended. The effect of this on households is that they will incur higher water bills, due to adhering to the government guidance to stay at home.

Mr Davies said: “Millions of people are suffering financially due to the need for social distancing and avoiding all non-essential work. With support for many, especially those who are self-employed, still many months away, it is only right that they be granted relief from further financial distress caused by higher water bills.”
