Swansea West MP, Geraint Davies, has joined the call to waive new Notice of Marriage fees for couples that must postpone their wedding due to Covid-19.

The letter to the Prime Minister, written by Janet Daby MP, asks that the government legislate or issue a directive for all existing Notices of Marriage to be valid for one further year.

If the rules stay as they are then many aspiring newlyweds will incur a cost of £70 or £94 if they are from outside the EU.

Mr Davies said: “Many couples, through no fault of their own, will have had to postpone their marriages this year due the Covid-19 crisis.

“The government must make sure that people are penalised for something that is completely out of their hands by extending all current Notices of Marriage by a year.”

Each year roughly half a million people get married, with potentially hundreds of thousands of these being affected by cancellations the longer the current crisis continues.
