Geraint Davies, MP for Swansea West, has joined more than 100 MPs from 7 parties demanding action to save dental practices.

The letter by Fleur Anderson MP, is calling the Chancellor’s attention to the lack of support for dentists from Government support schemes.

Research conducted by the British Dental Association (BDA) suggests that over three-quarters of dentists will not receive help from the support schemes, particularly effected will be the many self-employed dentists who earn just above the £50,000 threshold for the Self-Employed Income Support Scheme (SEISS).

Dental practices are also not eligible for business rate relief and many do not qualify for small business grants.

Mr Davies said: “The lack of support for dentists in government support schemes to date has left many practices in a precarious position.

“Many have been left with no other option but to apply for a Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan (CBIL), yet over 90% of applicants were not able to secure credit.”

Since the start of the Covid-19 crisis all routine care has been suspended, with over 70% of practices reporting that they can only remain financially viable for three months or less.

Mr Davies said: “Dentists are on the frontline of healthcare and provide a vital service to communities here in Swansea.

“The government must raise the £50,000 ap on support through SEISS, intervene to ensure easier access to the CBIL scheme and extend business rate relief to all practices.”
