Geraint Davies, MP for Swansea West, has called out an increase in racism directed at the Chinese community in his local area.

Said Geraint Davies, “I’m appalled that Chinese constituents in Swansea have experienced increased racism since the outbreak of Coronavirus. Racism of any kind is completely unacceptable and it’s saddening to hear from families who have been the target of abusive comments while shopping in Swansea City Centre.’

“Unfortunately, people are targeting the Chinese community as a result of misinformation and misunderstanding spread online and by the media about the Coronavirus. As a result, people have been avoiding Chinese restaurants and businesses since the start of the outbreak.

“This reaction is unjustified and unacceptable. There have been no confirmed cases of Coronavirus in Wales. The UK authorities must take all necessary precautions but an outbreak of a particular virus in a particular country is not the responsibility or in any way linked to that community in Swansea.”
