Geraint Davies MP hosting public meeting
The Bryn Rd residents meeting in the scout hut this week was packed and it underlined concerns about noise pollution and disturbance from the fun fare that is put opposite in the Rec ground in Mumbles Rd during the summer.
Residents raised issues about the level of noise – inhibiting home working, sometimes even vibrating the doors with repetitive replays of Queen etc at high volume from noon until midnight. In particular the noise from the a few rides including the bumper cars is very disturbing. In general there was acceptance that having a fun fare is probably good for tourism and the city but due regard, including limiting noise levels, is important to get the right balance.
I was very pleased that we got reassurances from the council pollution control and public health manager that noise abatement orders would be put in place and enforced in future. In particular statutory noise levels would be advised and from monitoring points and residents can report suspected noise abuse to get rapid response. We also discussed which way speakers are pointed and where more noisy stands could be positioned to minimise disturbance.
The residents pointed out that they, and not the council, own the land and that at least part of the grassed space should therefore be maintained for play and recreation for local families, in particular as the local primary schools have little land. The Rec land is churned from months of heavy use and therefore not left fit for family use afterwards. Therefore the council should consider protective walkway covers and sustainable and immediate reinstatement.
There have been issues due to traffic diverting through Bryn Rd when the fun fare is on and head to head driver arguments and wing mirrors knocked off. Traffic management must be out in place.
Air pollution from diesel generators blowing into peoples homes is also a concern so the generators’ location and alternative clean energy should be considered.
There have been instances of litter, vomit facies etc in nearby sidewalks etc so it is important that cleansing is regular and enough portaloos are in place.
Overall we had a lively and productive meeting and I look forward to getting back to residents with further news of what’s happening from the council to help.
🗣️ A really positive discussion about noise pollution and the regular fun fare on the Rec 🎪
🙏 Thank you to Adrian the council pollution control and public health manager who came from Swansea Council.
It is really important that residents report issues to the council to highlight depth of concerns.
I will continue to make sure that complaints are taken forward and acted upon.
