Member of Parliament for Swansea West Geraint Davies has welcomed the announcement by First Cymru buses today that they will increase the frequency of buses to Townhill and Mayhill  following his meeting with them yesterday and his campaign alongside residents.
Geraint Davies MP this week met with the Managing Director of First Cymru, Doug Claringbold and Network Manager, Sam Palmer over how bus services could be reinstated following recent cuts. The meeting with First Cymru chiefs follows Geraint’s packed public meeting in Townhill, where over 100 local residents met to demand a reversal of the recent cuts to bus services and for affordable fairs.
The buses serving Townhill and Mayhill were reduced, with the Townhill circular (numbers 12 and 13) being cut by a third and the Mayhill circular (number 11) being removed altogether with the route incorporated into the Townhill circular, yet there will now be an increase the frequency of the service of their number 12 and 13 buses from 9th June 2024.
Said Geraint Davies MP “First Cymru buses have agree to increase the frequency of the service of their number 12 and 13 buses from 9th June 2024. The 12/13 buses will operate a combined service every 15 minutes (Mon-Sat) instead of every 30 minutes which will improve local services again which were hit in October by service cuts.
“This is a great victory for our Townhill and Mayhill residents campaign to improve bus services for residents and follows my public meeting attended by a hundred residents and my meeting yesterday with the Managing Director of First Cymru, Doug Claringbold and Network Manager, Sam Palmer over how bus services could be reinstated following recent cuts. I am grateful that First Cymru has listened to residents and look forward to the upgraded service.
“The meeting with First Cymru chiefs follows Geraint’s packed public meeting in Townhill, where over 100 local residents met to demand a reversal of the recent cuts to bus services and for affordable fairs.
“The buses serving Townhill and Mayhill have been significantly reduced, with the Townhill circular (numbers 12 and 13) being cut by a third and the Mayhill circular (number 11) being removed altogether with the route incorporated into the Townhill circular.
“This had reduced the frequency of the services connecting Townhill to the Quadrant bus station from every 15 minutes to only every half an hour and often longer.
“Townhill and Mayhill deserves reliable, affordable bus services in particular as our community lives on the Hill with few shops and the cost of living crisis creating real hardship.
“Having had a positive meeting with Doug and Sam from First Cymru this week over the concerns from local residents on bus service cuts, affordable fares and the need for environmentally-friendly buses, I am happy that critical bus services for Townhill and Mayhill will be reinstated in the near future.
“Together we will work to create a better service and I will soon be convening another public meeting with First Cymru representatives in Mayhill in May to ensure the public’s concerns are heard by bus providers and we can move forward together .”
“This is good news for Townhill and Mayhill and shows that working together as a community we can secure better services and am grateful that First Cymru listened and took action in the public interest.”
