Local Member of Parliament for Swansea West, Geraint Davies, recently visited the manufacturing and recycling plant, Fiberight Ltd.

Geraint Davies said,

“This pioneering system separates mixed plastic and paper waste like sandwich packaging into paper and plastic by wetting and churning it in a drum so the heavier sodden paper falls off. Then the paper can be converted into sugar and material that was used for the 3D modes. The plastic can then be recycled.

Previously this mixed waste has either been thrown out into land fill or incinerated, which is bad for climate change and air pollution.”

The business, which is based in Waunarlwydd in the West of the constituency, uses a patented process to separate waste streams which would ordinarily go for incineration.

After separation Fiberight Ltd. then process them into a variety of materials and products. The whole system uses a closed water filtration system which prevents contamination into the surrounding area.

Geraint Davies MP said,

“I do not support the use of incineration with its associated airborne emissions as a means of waste disposal, burning plastic in an incinerator produces more CO2 than burning coal.

This example of green growth for Swansea is something we should be looking to promote, and I will be writing to Natural Resources Wales to help support them.”

The company have ambitious plans to expand the facility in Waunarlwydd and to create a centre of excellence for green growth, employing more people, developing green technologies, and ultimately continuing to make Wales an exemplar country for green technologies whilst drastically reducing incineration and landfill rates.

Speaking in support of more green jobs Geraint said,

“The company Fiberight is creating jobs and growth in Swansea and pioneering a more environmentally friendly approach than incineration to processing hybrid waste that may ultimately mean the latest generation of incinerators become obsolete and stranded assets for investors.”
