This week Geraint Davies, Labour and Co-operative MP for Swansea West, attended the European Scrutiny Committee.

Geraint said, People voted for Brexit, not to leave the Single Market and in Northern Ireland, where they voted for neither, so Foreign Secretary should encourage inward investment, as Northern Ireland benefits from being in the Single Market alongside fewer Northern Ireland/UK border checks.”

Speaking at the European Scrutiny Committee this week Geraint said, “I’ve spoken to people in Swansea who voted to leave. They said to me, ‘well, we want to be in the single market, the customs union, but we don’t want political control. So, we’re having a Brexit. We want to stay in the single market.’ So, there’s maybe a bit of confusion out there, but there’s certainly not clarity.”

When scrutinised by Geraint, the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development affairs, said: “We recognise in Ireland as well as in the UK, that there are some types of business where it’s becoming so logistically challenging that those businesses are just not able to continue conducting business.”

Geraint said, “Government should stop moaning about the Northern Ireland Protocol, it has signed, and start promoting Northern Ireland inward investment based on the benefit of remaining in the Single Market, in order to negotiate fewer Northern Ireland/UK border checks to bring light in place of heat to the deadlock.”

1 in 4 UK businesses who were selling to the EU have given up. The UK Government should encourage companies to set up in the Single Market in Northern Ireland to make the Protocol work for the UK instead of moaning and undermining the economy & Good Friday Agreement.
