Foodbank uses rise 100-fold under UK Conservative Government. In 2010, 26,000 people were using food banks, by last year, that figure was 2.6 million.

Local MP, Geraint Davies, spoke in the House of Commons this week addressing the issue that 1 in 4 people in the UK are currently in food poverty.

Speaking in the House of Commons Geraint asked:

“Has the Leader of the House looked at the evidence from the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee, including that of FareShare and the Food Foundation? Indeed, the UN special rapporteur called for a right to food and also supported what the Welsh Government are doing in ruling on universal free breakfasts and lunches for our schoolchildren across the nation?”

Geraint Davies MP has welcomed the Welsh Government’s plan to extent free school meals and make sure that no child in Swansea goes hungry.

Geraint Davies MP said,

“In 2010, 26,000 people used food banks. Last year, the figure was 2.6 million—a hundredfold increase. This year, we have one in four households in food poverty.

The UK Conservative Government need to follow the example of our Welsh Labour Government. We must provide free breakfasts and a right to food, so no child goes hungry in the UK”

The Swansea West MP plans to write to every foodbank in Swansea thanking them for their effort and to raise awareness.
