Geraint Davies, Member of Parliament for Swansea West, has intensified the campaign to safeguard 1000 university jobs and 60 projects in Wales by coordinating a letter from Welsh MPs to the Chancellor and Prime Minister to ask for a funding lifeline in the Budget.

Last week Geraint Davies MP was joined in Parliament by universities and other MPs from across Wales to launch a campaign to secure £71 million for funding for Welsh universities in the March Budget.

The campaign aims to safeguard jobs vital to create green growth in Wales and UK. The bridging funding is urgently needed as European Union funding faces a cliff edge.

Geraint Davies MP said,

“1000 university jobs and 60 projects at the forefront of green growth and innovation, essential to our future economic prospects, face a cliff edge as EU funding ends.

Alarm bells are ringing, so I’ve written alongside other Welsh MPs on behalf of our Welsh Universities to both the Chancellor and Prime Minister ahead of the Budget.

It’s important for all our futures that the Conservatives honour their promise of ‘not a penny less’ for Wales after we leave the EU. These jobs and projects are essential to recover from falling growth and exports and instead to get UK and Wales on a track for a green recovery.”

Since launching the campaign in Parliament last week, MPs from all over Wales have signed Geraint’s letter to the Chancellor and Prime Minister.
